They can be matched to the colour of your natural teeth, so they are much less visible than amalgam (silver) fillings. Our patients can elect to replace existing fillings with this material for cosmetic reasons.
White fillings are created using acrylic glass and tooth coloured resin. This composite material is ideal for all types of anterior and posterior fillings
Amalgam can expand or contract in reaction to hot or cold food or drinks. This movement can exert extra pressure on the tooth or create a small gap around the filling.
White fillings, completely bond to the surrounding tooth, reinforcing it, leaving no gaps, and preventing plaque accumulation. Another benefit of white fillings is that they require the removal of less of the natural tooth structure and are mercury-free.
Fillings aren’t designed to last a lifetime, regardless of the material used. Chewing on crunchy food, teeth grinding, and jaw clenching can cause significant wear and tear on dental fillings. On average, white fillings can last approximately 5 years.
