A crown fully covers the visible portion of the tooth that sits above the gum line. Crowns come in a range of different materials, including cosmetic varieties that closely match the colour of your natural teeth. At Acorn Dental Care we primarily use the finest Emax porcelain and Zirconia crowns. High-quality Emax porcelain crowns are fabricated onsite in a single visit using CEREC (Ceramic Reconstruction) technology.
We recommend crowns to our patients to treat a range of issues, such as:
• Restoring a damaged tooth where injury or severe tooth decay has weakened its structural integrity
• As a final step in a root canal treatment to restore the look and functionality of the affected tooth and protect it from further damage
• To anchor a dental bridge securely in place
• Cosmetic treatment for misshapen, broken, or discoloured teeth
Traditionally, a crown fitting takes place over two visits. At the first appointment, your dentist will examine and prepare the tooth by filing it down under local anaesthesia. Your dentist will then take a dental impression of the prepared tooth and send it off to a lab, where your crown will be fabricated. You will go home with a temporary crown and return for a second appointment when your permanent crown is finished.
However, here at Acorn Dental Care, we have invested in state-of-the-art CEREC® technology to take a 3D scan of your teeth and produce a bespoke Emax porcelain restoration on-site with the help of a state-of-the-art milling machine. This advanced system allows us to complete a crown fitting in a single appointment.
On average, we expect a crown to last between 5 and 15 years, depending on the material, its position within your mouth, and your standard of dental hygiene. Properly caring for your teeth and gums can help extend the lifespan of your crown.
