Dermal Fillers

Dermal-fillers-maidenheadThe Dermal Filler is a material used for the improvement of the appearance of facial wrinkles and fine lines that are associated with the natural ageing process; lip definition and the rejuvenation of the facial skin can also be addressed through Dermal Filler injections.

Dermal Fillers are based on hyaluronic acid, which is a naturally-occurring substance found in the human body that gives the skin its youthful volume and elasticity.

Bring back your youthful glow with a dermal filler treatment. Get in touch with us at Acorn Dental Care now, and we’ll be glad to give you more information.

As hyaluronic acid is naturally present in the human body, Dermal Fillers are considered as biocompatible – and can be used with very minimal risks for allergic reactions or hypersensitivity.

The effects from treatments with Dermal Fillers are long-lasting (but not permanent), and using this dermal filler for treatment will not adversely affect the natural movement of the facial muscles.

  • Very little to no downtime is expected after a Dermal Filler treatment, and the patient can go back to doing normal activities right after the procedure, which does not interfere with a busy schedule.
  • The natural movement of facial muscles will not be adversely affected by a Dermal Filler treatment.

What to Expect from the Dermal Filler Treatment Procedure

  1. The initial consultation with a practitioner will involve discussion of the problem areas that need to be treated, and how the Dermal Filler will improve the said areas. The patient’s goals and expectations will be taken into consideration, as well as the medical history, prior to the actual treatment. Pain relief will also be discussed; depending on the patient’s pain threshold, pain relief can be in the form of Lidocaine, an anaesthetic cream, dental block, or even ice.
  2. Dermal Fillers are administered by injecting the material through a fine needle into or just under the skin, in the areas that need to be treated. Visible improvement can be seen immediately after the treatment, but the full benefits of the treatment can be enjoyed in about a week’s time. The entire treatment procedure only takes around 15-30 minutes, depending on the treatment areas.

What to Expect After the Dermal Filler Treatments

There is very little to no downtime involved after a treatment, and the patient can resume normal activities right after the procedure; however, patients are advised to avoid too much sun, or cold weather exposure. It is also important not to apply makeup to, or touch the treated area for around six hours after the procedure – this is to minimise the risk of infection. A degree of swelling, redness, and discomfort may be experienced right after the treatment, but these symptoms are expected to go away in a few days.

Difference between Dermal Fillers and a Botox Treatment

There is a difference between the botulinum toxin and dermal fillers. The former relaxes the muscles whereas the fillers fill and plump up lines, wrinkles and grooves to make the skin look more youthful. Fillers usually consist of sterile hyaluronic acid gels made from non-animal sources.

As we age the skin’s’ natural hyaluronic acid is lost giving rise to the appearance of lines, wrinkles and folds. Injecting fillers into the skin acts to replace the hyaluronic acid that is lost with age. They are also used for lip enhancement and for shaping facial, hand and neck contours.

The injections, which only take a few minutes, are usually administered after a local anaesthetic has been applied either directly onto the skin, or incorporated into the syringe containing the filler. This serves to reduce or prevent any discomfort. The effect of the treatment is visible immediately. Depending on the area treated, skin type and the injection technique, the filler effect can last between six and 12 months (usually six months for lips). Follow-up treatments will help to maintain the plumped up look over time.
